#098: Why Asking for Help Feels So Hard, and How to Make It Easier
Have you ever known exactly what would help—and still stopped yourself from asking? Maybe it was another pair of eyes on an unfinished draft, a little time to think before speaking, or someone willing to work beside you. Before the words came out, another thought arrived: shouldn’t I be able to do this on my own?
In this solo episode, Dwight sits with that hesitation. Beginning with a stubborn pair of broken glasses, he explores the distance between quietly wanting support and finding words that give another person somewhere to meet us.
Along the way, he touches on grief, the uncertainty of people who want to help, and the vulnerability of saying what we want without first proving we deserve it. There’s room here for the other person’s limits, too: a clear request can still receive a no, and not every difficult situation can be repaired by asking differently.
For anyone holding an unfinished idea close, this is an invitation to imagine support as something specific and human. A thoughtful question. A page read with care. A few minutes alongside someone who doesn’t need us to have it all figured out before we begin.

00:00:05.630 --> 00:00:14.630
Dwight: Welcome to another edition of Community and Becoming, For the Love of Creatives podcast, and I'm your Connections and Community Guy host, Dwight.
3
00:00:15.310 --> 00:00:18.210
Dwight: And today, you're in for a treat.
4
00:00:18.360 --> 00:00:24.740
Dwight: You're going to have me in your earbuds or on your YouTube screen, and we're going to walk through a little something together.
5
00:00:25.570 --> 00:00:26.940
Dwight: I'll start with a question.
6
00:00:28.220 --> 00:00:32.749
Dwight: Have you ever known what would help you do better, and still hesitated to ask for it?
7
00:00:33.310 --> 00:00:39.230
Dwight: Maybe… You wanted the… you wanted the discussion question before a meeting.
8
00:00:39.500 --> 00:00:48.790
Dwight: Maybe you wanted feedback on an early draft of something you were working on. Or maybe you just needed 10 minutes with someone who could help you think.
9
00:00:50.040 --> 00:00:56.709
Dwight: But before you asked, you heard yourself thinking, shouldn't I be able to do this on my own?
10
00:00:57.460 --> 00:01:02.919
Dwight: Today, we're gonna turn one of those moments into a clear request.
11
00:01:04.500 --> 00:01:05.810
Dwight: What changes?
12
00:01:06.010 --> 00:01:08.960
Dwight: When you stop asking someone to make you feel confident.
13
00:01:09.160 --> 00:01:13.109
Dwight: And start asking for something that helps you contribute.
14
00:01:15.500 --> 00:01:19.490
Dwight: Recently, we explored the conditions that help us contribute well.
15
00:01:19.770 --> 00:01:27.719
Dwight: Today, We're looking at… What to do when one of those conditions involves needing another person?
16
00:01:28.600 --> 00:01:29.330
Dwight: Okay.
17
00:01:31.560 --> 00:01:37.959
Dwight: I'm going to share with you a little story that's easy to relate to, that's going to demonstrate
18
00:01:38.350 --> 00:01:45.050
Dwight: How it is that… I had a need, and this is something… very,
19
00:01:45.350 --> 00:01:50.280
Dwight: Close to my heart and rather salient because It's very practical.
20
00:01:51.310 --> 00:02:01.610
Dwight: I have several pairs of glasses, and there was… there is a particular pair that breaks at the stems. I think they're designed to come apart because
21
00:02:01.790 --> 00:02:07.419
Dwight: They're supposed to have interchangeable stems on them, and…
22
00:02:07.890 --> 00:02:20.449
Dwight: There's a certain trick to getting them done. Well, I go to this one place that works on my glasses, and of course, I can bring them in and say, hey, look, my…
23
00:02:20.700 --> 00:02:27.069
Dwight: My eyeglasses are… have fallen apart. I can't figure out how to put them together. Could you…
24
00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:29.340
Dwight: Put them together for me.
25
00:02:29.490 --> 00:02:32.159
Dwight: And then, right away, he'll just…
26
00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:39.469
Dwight: It looks like he just puts them in his hands, and he does something where, in just a quick motion.
27
00:02:39.710 --> 00:02:44.840
Dwight: the glasses are whole again, and they work perfectly well. I put them on.
28
00:02:45.410 --> 00:02:56.760
Dwight: I can spend hours trying to get the two parts to come together and it just doesn't work. I don't know how they hook together. I don't know exactly what's going on.
29
00:02:57.060 --> 00:03:05.939
Dwight: Well, a better thing for me to do would be next time I go in. And I am going to have to go in again soon because somehow they fell apart in the case.
30
00:03:06.700 --> 00:03:12.380
Dwight: And I'm going to say to him, okay, look, I've seen you put these together several times.
31
00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:17.360
Dwight: And you seem to do it without any effort, I can't figure it out.
32
00:03:17.860 --> 00:03:24.539
Dwight: Could you walk me through it step by step, so that… When I need these classes.
33
00:03:25.100 --> 00:03:28.849
Dwight: I have them, and I don't have to wait for your shop to open.
34
00:03:30.270 --> 00:03:35.500
Dwight: I'll take notes, just… just show me. Step 1, step 2, step 3, and…
35
00:03:35.620 --> 00:03:40.060
Dwight: And we'll go through it. I know it's that few, because you seem to do it with a quickness.
36
00:03:41.190 --> 00:03:47.239
Dwight: You see how I'm asking for exactly what I want? And here's the deal. He can say no.
37
00:03:47.300 --> 00:04:06.939
Dwight: I don't think that there's any trade secret with it, and I don't think he's gatekeeping, but maybe he's just not in the mood that day. I won't take offense, because the way that he's able to do it so quickly, I could probably just go to another shop and have someone show me, and they'd be perfectly willing. I can just…
38
00:04:07.070 --> 00:04:11.559
Dwight: go through the no's until I get a yes, and someone shows me the instructions.
39
00:04:12.450 --> 00:04:16.270
Dwight: So, looking at that example, You can see how.
40
00:04:16.860 --> 00:04:22.009
Dwight: I used a level of specificity for asking for exactly what I want.
41
00:04:22.410 --> 00:04:36.500
Dwight: And that's key. One of the problems that we run into is that maybe we can say that we have a need, or there's something that we want, but we're not specific enough to make it actionable.
42
00:04:36.870 --> 00:04:49.390
Dwight: And that can be rather frustrating to someone who receives that request, because, let's face it, people are busy, and they've got stuff going on. We don't need to get stuck in the stories that we might tell about
43
00:04:49.450 --> 00:04:59.789
Dwight: How it's about me and oh, there's something wrong with me because they won't they won't help. It may just be that they don't have enough of the information to let them know.
44
00:05:00.010 --> 00:05:08.669
Dwight: This is a thing that I've got that can help you, and it's no skin off my nose. It's appropriate for the relationship, and we it just makes sense to do it.
45
00:05:09.490 --> 00:05:16.359
Dwight: We gotta give people enough to know what's going on. This is a lesson that I pulled from
46
00:05:16.870 --> 00:05:34.890
Dwight: Nora McInerney's The Young Hot Widows Club that just had to do with the way that people move through grief, the way that people that are trying to support them might be trying to show up, but sometimes they just don't know what to do. Let's face it, it's when people…
47
00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:36.130
Dwight: Die?
48
00:05:36.580 --> 00:05:40.489
Dwight: It's a hard time for everyone involved, and…
49
00:05:40.730 --> 00:05:46.460
Dwight: It is a place where you're going to pick up the skills to navigate
50
00:05:46.880 --> 00:05:52.239
Dwight: How to deal with some things that are difficult under the best of circumstances.
51
00:05:53.110 --> 00:05:59.480
Dwight: Add to it the emotional soup that the person that was closest to the departed might feel.
52
00:05:59.740 --> 00:06:05.969
Dwight: And just the way that people are trying their best to Do what might help.
53
00:06:06.700 --> 00:06:09.460
Dwight: It's… it can be… it can be rough.
54
00:06:10.120 --> 00:06:14.100
Dwight: And… That book, I highly recommend that.
55
00:06:14.280 --> 00:06:30.150
Dwight: Everyone read it, because it prepares you for how to show up for people when they might need you the most, and it can be a source of comfort, as it was for me, as I was grieving one of the most difficult losses of my life.
56
00:06:32.440 --> 00:06:39.780
Dwight: Back to what it is to ask for specificity in a request.
57
00:06:40.150 --> 00:06:41.270
Dwight: A request?
58
00:06:41.500 --> 00:06:47.820
Dwight: Your request for support can be… Exactly…
59
00:06:48.030 --> 00:06:54.729
Dwight: Well, it needs to be precise, and it needs to label the conditions for you to contribute.
60
00:06:55.280 --> 00:06:58.170
Dwight: Now, I'm going to say something a little controversial.
61
00:06:58.490 --> 00:07:08.719
Dwight: And this is born out of an appreciation I have for some of the writings of Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan. Dan Sullivan is
62
00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:26.029
Dwight: rather famous for having this whole rant that he's done about the difference between needs and wants. And I can encapsulate it in saying that the difference between a need mentality and a want mentality is
63
00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:29.039
Dwight: For needs, it's kind of a fixed…
64
00:07:29.270 --> 00:07:40.279
Dwight: resources situation. You have to justify what it is that you need, and for some people, that's the reality. Some of you listening might be living in that, so let me expand your bubble just a little bit.
65
00:07:40.830 --> 00:07:44.090
Dwight: If we look at things from a wants.
66
00:07:44.320 --> 00:07:47.079
Dwight: Mentality, a different… a want frame.
67
00:07:48.450 --> 00:07:54.370
Dwight: It emboldens you to ask for what you want, without justification. You just state that you want it.
68
00:07:54.860 --> 00:08:01.219
Dwight: And you want it because you want it. It's not because you deserve it. You're saying what you want.
69
00:08:02.340 --> 00:08:05.460
Dwight: And it's… this isn't just a semantic
70
00:08:05.690 --> 00:08:10.590
Dwight: play on words. It's a whole different way of thinking.
71
00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:18.100
Dwight: Wanting comes from a mindset of there being abundance, of there being possibility.
72
00:08:18.350 --> 00:08:24.810
Dwight: And it's a much healthier frame to, go about…
73
00:08:27.300 --> 00:08:29.329
Dwight: Putting requests in front of people.
74
00:08:29.700 --> 00:08:37.070
Dwight: So we're going to talk about the mechanics of some of those things, but I want to plant those seeds as we continue this discussion.
75
00:08:37.659 --> 00:08:42.700
Dwight: brian: It's just a little something to have in the back of your mind as we go through this.
76
00:08:43.490 --> 00:08:48.389
Dwight: Robbie Wyler, So, let me throw out a hypothetical, and I'm going to…
77
00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:54.539
Dwight: be sure to lay on that frame of wants as I'm saying this. Imagine saying.
78
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:56.650
Dwight: I want more support.
79
00:08:57.900 --> 00:09:03.389
Dwight: The other person may care deeply about you, and have no clue what to do.
80
00:09:04.380 --> 00:09:11.029
Dwight: Now, I mean, now I want you to… Imagine, same scenario, but… You're going to have…
81
00:09:11.210 --> 00:09:13.920
Dwight: Some more magic words that you're going to say.
82
00:09:15.270 --> 00:09:23.939
Dwight: You're gonna say… I want to bring a useful recommendation to Thursday's discussion.
83
00:09:24.710 --> 00:09:29.990
Dwight: Could you send me the decision question by Wednesday, so I can prepare?
84
00:09:30.850 --> 00:09:36.460
Dwight: Now, it's not just that we've added a whole bunch more words, we've added more context.
85
00:09:36.880 --> 00:09:42.920
Dwight: We've painted a picture in their mind, walked them through exactly what we needed.
86
00:09:43.460 --> 00:09:50.349
Dwight: That tells them what we're… what you're trying to contribute, and what you're asking them to do.
87
00:09:50.650 --> 00:09:58.309
Dwight: Like, you're giving them a list of things. Now, here's the beautiful thing, it's a It's a closed-ended question.
88
00:09:59.620 --> 00:10:06.940
Dwight: Which is useful in this scenario, because you need to know if they can or they can't, because if they can't, you can ask someone else.
89
00:10:08.730 --> 00:10:12.120
Dwight: This is asking for what you want.
90
00:10:14.800 --> 00:10:22.680
Dwight: Now… You don't have to earn the right to, to ask for what you want.
91
00:10:23.330 --> 00:10:28.340
Dwight: And I want to hold two things in mind at the same time.
92
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:33.130
Dwight: We want to honor the appropriateness of the relationship.
93
00:10:33.350 --> 00:10:43.500
Dwight: Because you're not just going to walk up to some random stranger and start rattling off your specific needs. They will think you are crazy, and probably rightfully so.
94
00:10:45.430 --> 00:10:47.200
Dwight: But… Okay.
95
00:10:47.430 --> 00:10:58.380
Dwight: When you are going to approach someone that is empowered to give you the tools that you need to complete something that is important and pressing.
96
00:10:59.500 --> 00:11:01.440
Dwight: You need to give them.
97
00:11:02.200 --> 00:11:10.840
Dwight: As much as… as much as you can, the ingredients, the recipe, the… the steps that they need, you need to give them a map so that they are
98
00:11:11.560 --> 00:11:19.749
Dwight: Confident that they can help you, and they don't feel like there's obstacles in their way, or they're, you know, you don't want to overwhelm them, because
99
00:11:20.010 --> 00:11:23.700
Dwight: As we all know, everyone is busy enough.
100
00:11:25.760 --> 00:11:28.909
Dwight: Now, I… I like to shy away from
101
00:11:29.300 --> 00:11:32.659
Dwight: From jargon and things that are controversial, but…
102
00:11:33.010 --> 00:11:47.409
Dwight: Anyone who has listened to me for a while knows that I am incredibly enthusiastic about the things that I've learned through Exchange, especially around the philosophy and the tools of appreciative inquiry.
103
00:11:48.280 --> 00:11:50.820
Dwight: And we're not going to have…
104
00:11:50.980 --> 00:12:04.649
Dwight: any kind of a… a run-through of all the principles here, but I want to give you something that's bite-sized and practical that you can use as you carry it into these scenarios where
105
00:12:04.800 --> 00:12:07.360
Dwight: There might be a particular.
106
00:12:07.810 --> 00:12:13.600
Dwight: Desire that you have, in order to Complete a specific task.
107
00:12:13.850 --> 00:12:17.830
Dwight: Well, with that… with your own specificity, you need to…
108
00:12:18.090 --> 00:12:25.000
Dwight: Make sure that you report out to those who are able to help you exactly what you need.
109
00:12:26.050 --> 00:12:32.149
Dwight: Now, I want you to think back to a time when there was something that.
110
00:12:32.730 --> 00:12:34.430
Dwight: Something that worked really well.
111
00:12:34.620 --> 00:12:40.730
Dwight: And I want you to understand what helped. I want you to pull it apart. Put yourself…
112
00:12:40.870 --> 00:12:48.029
Dwight: In the scenario where you had all the tools that you need, and everything just worked.
113
00:12:48.390 --> 00:12:56.199
Dwight: And I want you to… look around. What was happening? What is that story? Now, this is where
114
00:12:56.640 --> 00:13:00.550
Dwight: We're going to play in the theater of your mind as you're going through this.
115
00:13:00.710 --> 00:13:05.769
Dwight: And… I want to give just a little bit of a moment for you to
116
00:13:06.330 --> 00:13:08.010
Dwight: Put yourself in that setting.
117
00:13:08.750 --> 00:13:12.340
Dwight: And… Inhabit what it was that.
118
00:13:12.610 --> 00:13:18.200
Dwight: was great about This scenario that you're imagining that worked.
119
00:13:19.250 --> 00:13:20.919
Dwight: Because we're going to carry it forward.
120
00:13:23.740 --> 00:13:25.859
Dwight: Now, I'm going to…
121
00:13:26.520 --> 00:13:36.239
Dwight: Just for the sake of having a thread that we can follow, use a hypothetical writing request scenario.
122
00:13:36.800 --> 00:13:39.970
Dwight: So… Go ahead.
123
00:13:40.100 --> 00:13:46.619
Dwight: Today's request, writing practice, is my way of applying the idea of
124
00:13:47.550 --> 00:13:57.090
Dwight: Pulling together, pulling forward something that worked really well, and adding a component of asking for what you want to help you
125
00:13:57.290 --> 00:14:00.680
Dwight: Move what you're doing to the next level, to move it forward.
126
00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:04.860
Dwight: So think of a time someone's support helped you contribute.
127
00:14:06.180 --> 00:14:07.869
Dwight: What did they actually do?
128
00:14:10.070 --> 00:14:13.599
Dwight: Was it that they asked a useful question?
129
00:14:14.140 --> 00:14:17.029
Dwight: Did they clarify a decision?
130
00:14:17.740 --> 00:14:26.650
Dwight: Did they listen to an unfinished idea or did they roll up their sleeves and take time to really dig in and work beside you?
131
00:14:31.510 --> 00:14:33.889
Dwight: Which part of that support would be useful now?
132
00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:41.180
Dwight: And it may be multiple things, but…
133
00:14:41.350 --> 00:14:43.149
Dwight: What would be most useful now?
134
00:14:43.790 --> 00:14:50.770
Dwight: So I'm going to give you a frame now that I want you to use. If you're in a space where you can write.
135
00:14:51.270 --> 00:14:54.960
Dwight: Let's just make 3 spaces on a page.
136
00:14:55.660 --> 00:15:01.129
Dwight: three different headings. So the first heading is going to be, name the contribution.
137
00:15:02.300 --> 00:15:03.810
Dwight: Okay, leave some room.
138
00:15:04.780 --> 00:15:08.430
Dwight: And the next heading will be, Name the Help.
139
00:15:09.350 --> 00:15:10.280
Dwight: Okay?
140
00:15:11.740 --> 00:15:15.560
Dwight: And the final heading will be, Make the Ask.
141
00:15:16.230 --> 00:15:18.320
Dwight: So, under Name the Contribution.
142
00:15:21.240 --> 00:15:22.909
Dwight: What are you trying to do?
143
00:15:23.100 --> 00:15:24.100
Dwight: Share.
144
00:15:24.310 --> 00:15:27.120
Dwight: understand, Or decide.
145
00:15:30.040 --> 00:15:31.060
Dwight: All right.
146
00:15:32.250 --> 00:15:33.619
Dwight: Under Name the Help.
147
00:15:34.690 --> 00:15:38.280
Dwight: What could another person actually do that would help?
148
00:15:43.220 --> 00:15:46.109
Dwight: And under Make the Ask.
149
00:15:47.300 --> 00:15:50.010
Dwight: Who is an appropriate person to ask?
150
00:15:50.160 --> 00:15:53.750
Dwight: And what would a manageable request sound like?
151
00:15:57.950 --> 00:16:07.690
Dwight: And that's your thinking space, your scratch pad for working through a request that's going to result in
152
00:16:08.040 --> 00:16:14.709
Dwight: Pointing you toward the things that will get you the resources that you need to contribute effectively.
153
00:16:15.770 --> 00:16:21.980
Dwight: So, here's a few things that you could… use as…
154
00:16:22.250 --> 00:16:26.679
Dwight: The outputs from those things that you think through from those three headings.
155
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:38.130
Dwight: So underneath them, you're going to have a word stem that's the result of your thinking on the page that says, I am working toward
156
00:16:38.520 --> 00:16:39.390
Dwight: X.
157
00:16:41.760 --> 00:16:50.500
Dwight: And you'll form your request. It's going to start something like, would you be willing to… X.
158
00:16:50.760 --> 00:16:52.300
Dwight: By why.
159
00:16:54.050 --> 00:16:58.920
Dwight: Right? So, would you be willing to do that thing that I need Bye.
160
00:16:59.210 --> 00:17:14.440
Dwight: this deadline. And the deadline's optional. We'll talk through that. So, let me give an example. For instance, so we could write on our page after we've done our thinking, I'm trying to make the opening of this piece clearer.
161
00:17:15.050 --> 00:17:17.850
Dwight: Would you be willing to read the first page?
162
00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:21.140
Dwight: And tell me where your interest rises or drops.
163
00:17:23.660 --> 00:17:28.330
Dwight: So Notice there wasn't a deadline in that example, but…
164
00:17:28.790 --> 00:17:39.480
Dwight: it should be such a light lift for the person that I'm asking that to read a page, they could probably just go through it, or, you know, they can tell me, oh yeah, I'll put that on my to-do.
165
00:17:41.560 --> 00:17:45.259
Dwight: So let's think about what it would look like in a typical workplace.
166
00:17:45.990 --> 00:17:50.120
Dwight: I want to contribute a considered perspective in our discussion.
167
00:17:50.660 --> 00:17:54.519
Dwight: Could we have two minutes to write down our thoughts before we begin sharing?
168
00:17:57.950 --> 00:18:03.959
Dwight: That sounds pretty… Low stakes? It doesn't, use up a lot of time.
169
00:18:04.580 --> 00:18:08.330
Dwight: And, again, it frames it in such a way that
170
00:18:08.800 --> 00:18:11.940
Dwight: The person running the meeting can say yes or no.
171
00:18:15.910 --> 00:18:19.739
Dwight: Now, if you're driving or doing something that needs your attention.
172
00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:22.899
Dwight: Return to this later. Otherwise.
173
00:18:23.790 --> 00:18:26.650
Dwight: Pause here and try one sentence.
174
00:18:34.020 --> 00:18:35.009
Dwight: All right.
175
00:18:35.630 --> 00:18:44.519
Dwight: So, if you've had a chance to work through the exercise, great. If you're driving, I hope you kept your eyes on the road, and you didn't run over any mailboxes.
176
00:18:48.780 --> 00:18:54.810
Dwight: Now, I want you to appreciate that a clear request Doesn't guarantee a yes.
177
00:18:55.710 --> 00:18:59.560
Dwight: It just gives you something specific to discuss.
178
00:19:01.970 --> 00:19:06.970
Dwight: when you're formulating your requests, I know I've given you the scratch pad of
179
00:19:07.120 --> 00:19:14.609
Dwight: How to get there from the things that you need, and… or the things that you want, and how to.
180
00:19:15.470 --> 00:19:16.720
Dwight: evaluate.
181
00:19:17.610 --> 00:19:21.710
Dwight: How to put together a specific request, but…
182
00:19:22.260 --> 00:19:24.819
Dwight: I need you to put it through some…
183
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:31.570
Dwight: Mental gates that you're going to use as you're… you're preparing to actually
184
00:19:31.700 --> 00:19:34.450
Dwight: make this request. So, the first of these is…
185
00:19:36.700 --> 00:19:39.480
Dwight: Is the person that you're going to ask.
186
00:19:39.590 --> 00:19:42.809
Dwight: The appropriate person.
187
00:19:43.400 --> 00:19:46.439
Dwight: And this could be based on a lot of things, like…
188
00:19:46.890 --> 00:20:00.589
Dwight: Is it someone that you've built a rapport with, you have a little bit of a relationship, and there's some vulnerability that's been shared? Or is it just some random person that you have seen on a street corner once?
189
00:20:03.570 --> 00:20:07.630
Dwight: Is this request specific enough that they can respond?
190
00:20:11.030 --> 00:20:16.230
Dwight: Is it… Proportionate to the relationship and the situation.
191
00:20:18.930 --> 00:20:19.910
Dwight: All right.
192
00:20:20.100 --> 00:20:27.240
Dwight: I know, may tell you about someone's time, their capacity, their role.
193
00:20:27.930 --> 00:20:30.759
Dwight: Or their… or their willingness to…
194
00:20:31.430 --> 00:20:38.180
Dwight: to contribute a bit, but don't get too caught up in it. You don't have to decide immediately that a no
195
00:20:38.330 --> 00:20:42.340
Dwight: Says anything other than, No. Or, not now.
196
00:20:43.510 --> 00:20:48.050
Dwight: We don't know what's going on with someone, and if they're saying no, it's probably because
197
00:20:48.240 --> 00:20:56.740
Dwight: They are rather stretched with their own resources and they they just can't accept it. It's okay. It's not about you.
198
00:20:57.230 --> 00:21:01.750
Dwight: It's just that… for whatever reason, They can't.
199
00:21:02.660 --> 00:21:04.200
Dwight: Circle back, it'll be fine.
200
00:21:06.200 --> 00:21:09.940
Dwight: And not every situation is solved by asking more clearly.
201
00:21:10.550 --> 00:21:15.270
Dwight: If the issue is a harmful pattern or an unmet obligation.
202
00:21:16.260 --> 00:21:20.229
Dwight: A request isn't going to magically fix it.
203
00:21:22.690 --> 00:21:27.260
Dwight: There, there may be other Other things that may need to happen.
204
00:21:29.270 --> 00:21:31.070
Dwight: So… hmm.
205
00:21:32.150 --> 00:21:36.219
Dwight: If we want to talk about this in terms of.
206
00:21:36.550 --> 00:21:38.570
Dwight: leadership and community.
207
00:21:40.350 --> 00:21:44.970
Dwight: Here's, something to consider. So, if you lead people.
208
00:21:45.320 --> 00:21:47.040
Dwight: There's another side to this.
209
00:21:48.500 --> 00:21:51.349
Dwight: How easy is it for someone to tell you?
210
00:21:51.770 --> 00:21:53.509
Dwight: What would help them contribute?
211
00:21:55.780 --> 00:21:59.179
Dwight: We got to hold up that mirror and, and think about.
212
00:21:59.730 --> 00:22:04.900
Dwight: How it is that… Things land when we're on the receiving end.
213
00:22:06.080 --> 00:22:07.190
Dwight: And…
214
00:22:07.870 --> 00:22:17.780
Dwight: After hearing this, perhaps you have some material to help someone to form sharper requests that can make it so that
215
00:22:18.830 --> 00:22:26.769
Dwight: You… are better empowered to help them because they can say more clearly exactly what they need.
216
00:22:28.520 --> 00:22:30.340
Dwight: Now, if I was in a workshop.
217
00:22:30.760 --> 00:22:35.130
Dwight: I would apply this by saying something like.
218
00:22:35.870 --> 00:22:38.860
Dwight: Think of the time this group worked well together.
219
00:22:39.600 --> 00:22:41.389
Dwight: What support made a difference?
220
00:22:42.380 --> 00:22:45.989
Dwight: And what could make it easier to ask for?
221
00:22:49.990 --> 00:22:53.030
Dwight: And for my art-centered creatives who are listening.
222
00:22:53.770 --> 00:22:57.330
Dwight: You don't need a formal leadership role to practice this.
223
00:22:58.300 --> 00:23:01.229
Dwight: You can ask a collaborator something like.
224
00:23:01.880 --> 00:23:05.220
Dwight: What would help you bring your best thinking to this?
225
00:23:08.100 --> 00:23:09.150
Dwight: It's simple.
226
00:23:13.080 --> 00:23:16.309
Dwight: You may still feel nervous, but now.
227
00:23:17.020 --> 00:23:24.410
Dwight: You're not asking someone to solve your entire relationship with confidence. You're asking for one specific thing that
228
00:23:25.360 --> 00:23:26.870
Dwight: Could help you contribute.
229
00:23:28.800 --> 00:23:35.289
Dwight: The smaller the pieces, the easier it is to… Arrive at yes or no.
230
00:23:38.940 --> 00:23:41.790
Dwight: Now, and the thought exercise at the top.
231
00:23:43.830 --> 00:23:46.630
Dwight: You identified what you're trying to do.
232
00:23:47.370 --> 00:23:49.000
Dwight: Named what would help.
233
00:23:49.950 --> 00:23:51.780
Dwight: And formed a request.
234
00:23:52.240 --> 00:23:55.619
Dwight: Your next step is to decide whether, when.
235
00:23:56.250 --> 00:23:58.379
Dwight: And who you're gonna use it with.
236
00:24:00.640 --> 00:24:08.839
Dwight: At For the Love of Creatives, we serve heart-centered creatives who want to move from surviving in isolation to thriving in community.
237
00:24:09.250 --> 00:24:14.149
Dwight: Part of that is learning to ask for support and learning how to offer it.
238
00:24:14.830 --> 00:24:20.019
Dwight: If you'd like help preparing a conversation like this, we're helping your team practice it together.
239
00:24:22.470 --> 00:24:25.709
Dwight: Use the contact links that we have in the show notes.
240
00:24:26.930 --> 00:24:29.120
Dwight: We can explore what would be useful.
241
00:24:29.440 --> 00:24:31.679
Dwight: And whether working together is a fit.
