#093: Why Talented People Quietly Disengage

#093: Why Talented People Quietly Disengage

Have you ever sat in a room where everyone could feel something was off—but everyone kept speaking around it?

In creative teams, silence is rarely empty. It can hold the question no one wants to ask, the resentment beneath a joke, the idea someone has stopped offering because it no longer feels safe to bring their full self into the room. And when we keep avoiding what is true, the cost does not disappear. It shows up in stalled decisions, disengagement, burnout, and the quiet loss of trust.

In this episode, Dwight reflects on the human reality of creative tension: gifted, well-intentioned people can still find themselves strained by competing needs, limited resources, old patterns, and conversations left unnamed. He shares a simple invitation for moving through those moments: notice the signal, name the real question, and navigate with care.

This is not about forcing vulnerability or pretending conflict is easy. It is about creating enough safety for honesty to exist—so people can tell the truth, remain connected, and make something better together.

This is Maddox & Dwight! More than anything, we want to connect and communicate with you. We don't want to think of you as listeners. We want to think of you as community. So, scroll to the bottom of the show notes and click the SUBSCRIBE link. Thank you!

00:00:01.790 --> 00:00:18.000
Dwight: Welcome to another edition of Community and Becoming for the love of creatives. I'm your host, Dwight, and today we're going to talk about some creative tension. So, every team has a conversation that they keep postponing.

2
00:00:18.120 --> 00:00:24.079
Dwight: You know those things that just keep coming around and never quite seem to be solved.

3
00:00:24.900 --> 00:00:32.209
Dwight: We've all been in those situations where there's people walking away with polite agreement.

4
00:00:32.850 --> 00:00:36.920
Dwight: But there's also just decisions that

5
00:00:37.020 --> 00:00:41.290
Dwight: quietly stall. We keep kicking the can down the road.

6
00:00:41.740 --> 00:01:01.459
Dwight: And you'll notice that there are really talented, good people who just seem to keep disengaging, and everyone can kind of feel that tension, but nobody really says anything. Like, it's just something that's there, it hangs in the room, it hangs over everybody.

7
00:01:01.850 --> 00:01:04.290
Dwight: And here's the deal, it has a real cost.

8
00:01:04.500 --> 00:01:08.730
Dwight: Avoidance costs time, Momentum?

9
00:01:09.270 --> 00:01:10.340
Dwight: Clarity?

10
00:01:10.750 --> 00:01:12.060
Dwight: and trust.

11
00:01:13.600 --> 00:01:23.690
Dwight: And it also makes it so that people just don't feel safe. They can't bring their real issues to the table.

12
00:01:24.100 --> 00:01:34.819
Dwight: They have to try to fit some weird, over-edited version of themselves into the room, because it just doesn't feel okay to…

13
00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:45.040
Dwight: Let whatever it might be that's really Causing the friction to… Be spoken out loud.

14
00:01:46.250 --> 00:01:48.299
Dwight: Alright, stay with me here.

15
00:01:48.930 --> 00:02:00.199
Dwight: I'm gonna give you a way to recognize when these things pop up, to see them in conversation, and see the conversation at the surface, and see what's happening beneath the conversation.

16
00:02:00.310 --> 00:02:07.829
Dwight: Plus We'll walk away with the question that we can use to begin to…

17
00:02:08.160 --> 00:02:14.179
Dwight: Really open things up and try to shift things to a direction that's a little more productive.

18
00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:19.899
Dwight: Now, the main thing that we want to really look at is how

19
00:02:20.600 --> 00:02:28.930
Dwight: In Teams, you're gonna have a collection of people that have different backgrounds, they have their gifts, they have the things that they're really talented at.

20
00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:33.240
Dwight: And whenever you have a collection of people that come together.

21
00:02:33.530 --> 00:02:43.489
Dwight: It's never that you have a lack of talent, or a lack of smarts, or the lack of another slide deck.

22
00:02:43.700 --> 00:02:45.949
Dwight: Lord knows, we probably have

23
00:02:46.500 --> 00:02:52.410
Dwight: Way more of those than we would ever care to see, but here's the deal.

24
00:02:53.850 --> 00:03:01.149
Dwight: When those rooms become… Unsafe. When the tension becomes thick enough to cut with an axe.

25
00:03:02.120 --> 00:03:04.219
Dwight: We got problems.

26
00:03:05.600 --> 00:03:16.740
Dwight: Now, you may remember, I believe it was episode number 86, where I talk about how the best off-sites are the ones where we…

27
00:03:17.330 --> 00:03:20.790
Dwight: Finally get around to the things that need to be said.

28
00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:23.549
Dwight: You know, where people can…

29
00:03:24.260 --> 00:03:30.600
Dwight: Let's talk about the elephant in the room. Well, we're gonna retread some of that, but we're gonna extend that a little bit.

30
00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:33.050
Dwight: So, the idea is.

31
00:03:35.010 --> 00:03:38.370
Dwight: We want to be able to make it so that we can call out the truth.

32
00:03:39.480 --> 00:03:56.080
Dwight: Alright? And I get it. There are certain settings where you have to put on your armor. You gotta be a certain person in order to just move things forward, and you don't want to create waves, and you don't want to step on anybody's toes.

33
00:03:56.140 --> 00:04:05.769
Dwight: But sometimes, you just gotta get real. Because the more you try to put a pretty face on something that's ugly, the more it starts to stink.

34
00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:21.510
Dwight: And let's face it, life is hard enough without trying to put lipstick on pigs and trying to put sequins on a steaming pile, alright?

35
00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:37.690
Dwight: Here's the thing, we… if we spend so much time trying to twist ourselves into shapes to make it so that we… we make it so nobody gets offended or hurt.

36
00:04:37.810 --> 00:04:44.289
Dwight: then we wind up hurting ourselves. We wind up putting ourselves in danger of needing to take

37
00:04:44.630 --> 00:04:50.429
Dwight: More than an extended holiday. I'm talking about

38
00:04:50.600 --> 00:05:04.519
Dwight: probably some hospital time, probably doing some… some serious damage, causing ulcers, seizures, who knows? But let's… let's not worry about that. We're gonna talk about some interventions that we can take before it gets to that point.

39
00:05:05.470 --> 00:05:10.550
Dwight: Heart-centered creatives know that the cost of hiding their work, or minimizing themselves.

40
00:05:10.680 --> 00:05:14.790
Dwight: Can be a lot more than just a missed opportunity.

41
00:05:15.140 --> 00:05:18.560
Dwight: It's something that really cuts to the bone, but here's the deal.

42
00:05:19.190 --> 00:05:35.419
Dwight: At our hearts, we are all creative. Let's face it. In order to get out of bed in the morning, in order to figure out how it was you needed to navigate what you needed to do, you had to apply some creative smarts. You had to do some things that had you

43
00:05:35.530 --> 00:05:39.010
Dwight: Step outside of the box a little bit, just to make it.

44
00:05:40.390 --> 00:05:49.220
Dwight: Teams are interesting collections of creative people, no matter what the team is assembled for. We're not all the Avengers.

45
00:05:49.520 --> 00:05:50.910
Dwight: And that's okay.

46
00:05:51.280 --> 00:06:01.050
Dwight: Sometimes we just need to put our heads together to make it so that we can do a project. I'm a big believer in the fact that many hands make light work.

47
00:06:01.190 --> 00:06:09.599
Dwight: And that's why we have teams, because if we just had a single person that was trying to figure things out, then we would…

48
00:06:09.750 --> 00:06:16.800
Dwight: Only have that single perspective, that single person's experience to try to move things forward.

49
00:06:17.200 --> 00:06:29.039
Dwight: Whenever we engage with someone that's outside of ourselves, sometimes we are challenged. Sometimes we see things that we had no way of being able to imagine before.

50
00:06:29.280 --> 00:06:34.840
Dwight: And that's really the beauty of doing things in groups.

51
00:06:35.870 --> 00:06:38.299
Dwight: Now, with that, there are going to be

52
00:06:38.500 --> 00:06:49.480
Dwight: Rising concerns, maybe a little cultural friction, maybe there are people that just have different needs, and it can cause dissent, it can cause resentment.

53
00:06:49.840 --> 00:06:55.699
Dwight: It's just a part of being human. It's how we show up to deal with it that makes all the difference.

54
00:06:56.080 --> 00:07:01.430
Dwight: Now, I'm going to leave you today with a framework for dealing with exactly that.

55
00:07:01.780 --> 00:07:08.439
Dwight: And I know that we love alliteration, it makes it really easy to remember things, so here's the framework.

56
00:07:09.560 --> 00:07:13.770
Dwight: Notice… name, navigate.

57
00:07:14.410 --> 00:07:15.760
Dwight: Got it.

58
00:07:16.740 --> 00:07:23.369
Dwight: Alright, so let's start with the first… the first N notice. We want to notice the signal.

59
00:07:25.020 --> 00:07:28.829
Dwight: What is it that gets joked about repeatedly?

60
00:07:30.020 --> 00:07:33.980
Dwight: Huh? So, here's the thing with comedy.

61
00:07:34.970 --> 00:07:54.660
Dwight: I learned a little while ago that comedy is just a test of a violation. It's a way that we can say something in such a way that maybe really needs to be said, but in a way where we can kind of take it back, because it's… it's just a joke, right?

62
00:07:55.160 --> 00:08:00.500
Dwight: And whenever we're dealing with Things that are a little uncomfortable.

63
00:08:01.160 --> 00:08:04.340
Dwight: It's real easy to package them and joke, so pay attention.

64
00:08:04.600 --> 00:08:05.990
Dwight: Whenever there's…

65
00:08:06.120 --> 00:08:13.540
Dwight: A joke that keeps coming around, because there may be an uncomfortable truth that needs to be surfaced.

66
00:08:15.810 --> 00:08:21.199
Dwight: Along those same lines, Notice what keeps returning.

67
00:08:21.590 --> 00:08:26.569
Dwight: What is it that keeps coming back? What is it that we never quite solve?

68
00:08:26.750 --> 00:08:32.870
Dwight: That we keep trying to work at the edges of, but somehow it just…

69
00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:35.629
Dwight: Keeps showing up like a bad penny.

70
00:08:37.490 --> 00:08:40.019
Dwight: And another angle to look at.

71
00:08:41.080 --> 00:08:43.829
Dwight: Notice where the energy drops.

72
00:08:44.070 --> 00:08:47.050
Dwight: Where conflict gets redirected.

73
00:08:47.420 --> 00:08:52.999
Dwight: Or where, sometimes, There's just an uncomfortable silence that…

74
00:08:53.540 --> 00:08:59.109
Dwight: Keeps hanging over that same topic, or… That same thing that keeps…

75
00:08:59.620 --> 00:09:04.519
Dwight: Somehow coming up. You know, you know, you're starting to see the elephant

76
00:09:04.830 --> 00:09:09.000
Dwight: In the room. That thing that… Shall not be named.

77
00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:14.950
Dwight: Think about all of those things, think about those questions.

78
00:09:16.050 --> 00:09:24.030
Dwight: And… I want you to… Change your frame on them just a little bit, and think that that tension

79
00:09:24.310 --> 00:09:28.100
Dwight: is information. It's not automatically a threat.

80
00:09:28.980 --> 00:09:34.050
Dwight: Lean into when you see those things and think about them as an opportunity.

81
00:09:35.170 --> 00:09:37.469
Dwight: Because you notice where it gets weird.

82
00:09:37.940 --> 00:09:39.820
Dwight: You can start doing something about it.

83
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:44.409
Dwight: Alright, so that's… that's where we want to go for notice.

84
00:09:44.550 --> 00:09:51.390
Dwight: So, in our framework, we said notice, then name. We want to name the real question.

85
00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:52.550
Dwight: Alright?

86
00:09:52.890 --> 00:09:57.010
Dwight: So let's move from blame to curiosity.

87
00:09:57.860 --> 00:10:03.850
Dwight: Instead of… Asking a question like, why aren't people accountable?

88
00:10:04.930 --> 00:10:06.540
Dwight: Let's try this on instead.

89
00:10:07.750 --> 00:10:11.569
Dwight: What's making follow-through Hard for us right now.

90
00:10:12.510 --> 00:10:18.860
Dwight: Right? You see the difference there? Instead of pointing a finger, And talking about them.

91
00:10:20.610 --> 00:10:24.249
Dwight: We're not worried about them being accountable. We are getting in the boat.

92
00:10:24.490 --> 00:10:30.019
Dwight: And we're gonna say, well, what is it that's making it difficult

93
00:10:30.690 --> 00:10:32.649
Dwight: For us to follow through right now.

94
00:10:33.010 --> 00:10:36.389
Dwight: We're all rolling up our sleeves and trying to figure it out.

95
00:10:36.660 --> 00:10:38.450
Dwight: Doesn't that feel way better?

96
00:10:39.530 --> 00:10:42.960
Dwight: Alright, so let's try another one for naming the real question.

97
00:10:44.510 --> 00:10:48.760
Dwight: Instead of saying, Why is this team resistant?

98
00:10:50.290 --> 00:10:51.810
Dwight: Why don't we ask?

99
00:10:53.160 --> 00:10:58.040
Dwight: What concern Hasn't yet had a safe place to be heard.

100
00:10:59.580 --> 00:11:10.990
Dwight: And I get that can be a little bit of a stretch. And the thing is, I know that the default that we are taught is to look at things as problems to diagnose.

101
00:11:12.500 --> 00:11:20.370
Dwight: It's not your fault. It's… it's the culture. It's the prevailing, overwhelming way that we're all conditioned.

102
00:11:20.830 --> 00:11:25.989
Dwight: You gotta see a problem so you can fix it. Let's… let's erase that.

103
00:11:27.650 --> 00:11:35.280
Dwight: how can we imagine that things can be the best that they possibly can be? How can things be better than we imagine?

104
00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:41.039
Dwight: Let's… let's stop trying to fix problems.

105
00:11:41.240 --> 00:11:55.259
Dwight: Alright, so we've talked about noticing the signal. We've talked about naming the real question. You've got a few ways of being able to phrase… phrase questions in such a way that we're not blaming, we're just curious.

106
00:11:56.240 --> 00:12:00.790
Dwight: So, next we're going to… Navigate with care.

107
00:12:01.050 --> 00:12:02.120
Dwight: Alright?

108
00:12:03.050 --> 00:12:10.609
Dwight: a facilitator Doesn't force disclosure or demand manufactured vulnerability.

109
00:12:11.030 --> 00:12:17.499
Dwight: Right? We're not going to role-play our way into making it so that we suddenly are enlightened.

110
00:12:17.590 --> 00:12:34.409
Dwight: Life doesn't work that way. We're people. We're complicated feeling beings, and we have our own baggage that we all carry, and we have to be comfortable with our own internal tension before we can deal with the things that are happening outside.

111
00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:41.799
Dwight: What we facilitators do instead is we design enough safety, structure.

112
00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:47.650
Dwight: And listening for people to tell the truth and move toward A shared commitment.

113
00:12:48.530 --> 00:12:49.400
Dwight: Right?

114
00:12:49.640 --> 00:12:55.240
Dwight: It doesn't have to be that we're all incredibly happy. We just…

115
00:12:55.770 --> 00:12:59.369
Dwight: Called things out, and put everything on the table.

116
00:13:01.220 --> 00:13:04.890
Dwight: And we do so in such a way that we are…

117
00:13:05.560 --> 00:13:12.909
Dwight: Honest, and we're going to… we're going to make it so that it's safe to share. Safe to say what's… what's coming up.

118
00:13:14.690 --> 00:13:19.559
Dwight: So, a thing about honesty. I know that there's… there was…

119
00:13:20.260 --> 00:13:28.290
Dwight: A little bit of a trend a few years back around radical candor, and unfortunately, there were some

120
00:13:28.700 --> 00:13:32.980
Dwight: People that just use that as a license to be

121
00:13:33.530 --> 00:13:38.090
Dwight: evil, to be brutal. To… to just be cruel. No, no, no, no.

122
00:13:39.160 --> 00:13:41.210
Dwight: Honesty without care.

123
00:13:41.320 --> 00:13:42.860
Dwight: Can cause great harm.

124
00:13:44.500 --> 00:13:50.199
Dwight: There's a… there's a way to be honest, and a way to do so in a way that's kind.

125
00:13:52.350 --> 00:13:57.480
Dwight: Now, care without honesty Can just leave a team stuck.

126
00:13:58.870 --> 00:14:05.189
Dwight: Right? We don't want to be so extreme with trying to be nice.

127
00:14:05.650 --> 00:14:09.939
Dwight: that we… Don't create a path for problems to be resolved.

128
00:14:10.260 --> 00:14:16.590
Dwight: We need to find a way for honesty and care to harmonize.

129
00:14:16.950 --> 00:14:20.469
Dwight: We need to… Be equipped with both.

130
00:14:21.840 --> 00:14:29.580
Dwight: And… that's… really… In a nutshell, what it is to navigate with care.

131
00:14:30.310 --> 00:14:33.800
Dwight: We want to present the truth.

132
00:14:34.650 --> 00:14:38.629
Dwight: But do so in such a way that Doesn't cause harm.

133
00:14:40.610 --> 00:14:47.809
Dwight: So to bring this away from the realm of just being theoretical, I'm gonna take a little bit of a risk and share

134
00:14:47.990 --> 00:14:55.699
Dwight: A little bit of my own personal journey in dealing with these very… These very things.

135
00:14:56.420 --> 00:15:04.320
Dwight: I had to deal with a rather large project that assembled a diverse group of people, and

136
00:15:05.170 --> 00:15:09.610
Dwight: I am trying my best to protect the guilty and the innocent.

137
00:15:10.330 --> 00:15:13.870
Dwight: Because I'm sure that… Some of you are listening.

138
00:15:14.150 --> 00:15:15.419
Dwight: And that's okay.

139
00:15:17.990 --> 00:15:22.930
Dwight: And if you recognize a little bit of yourself in this.

140
00:15:23.280 --> 00:15:30.170
Dwight: And you know me personally, there's a chance I could be talking about you, but I'm not going to spill any tea.

141
00:15:31.880 --> 00:15:38.170
Dwight: We had to deal with a months-long project, Where we had to uncover

142
00:15:38.870 --> 00:15:44.139
Dwight: large amounts of data. We had to look at a very specific problem.

143
00:15:44.460 --> 00:15:52.410
Dwight: And… it… created a lot of tension. It was one of those things where we had

144
00:15:53.180 --> 00:15:59.300
Dwight: A great deal of… of will, of…

145
00:15:59.450 --> 00:16:02.570
Dwight: Really talented people that wanted to

146
00:16:03.040 --> 00:16:15.700
Dwight: show up and deliver their best, but they wanted to do it on their terms. They had a lot of their own competing obligations, and in some ways, they were… everyone was under-resourced in some ways.

147
00:16:16.550 --> 00:16:30.810
Dwight: And we had, a large… heavy demands. And anytime you have some, have demands exceeding resources, it's going to cause that creative tension to spiral.

148
00:16:31.690 --> 00:16:33.769
Dwight: Now, the beautiful thing is.

149
00:16:34.110 --> 00:16:43.260
Dwight: That, even though we kept having a lot of the same… the same problems present themselves, there was…

150
00:16:43.550 --> 00:16:57.100
Dwight: A factor, I believe, was that we just had extended time, and with more time, there were more opportunities to find even more caches of data, more… more information to make things even more complicated.

151
00:16:57.520 --> 00:17:11.029
Dwight: And it just… it kept growing out of control. So, again, we were under-resourced because they were… in the grand scheme of things, even though, as I said, it was a large and disparate team.

152
00:17:11.460 --> 00:17:19.410
Dwight: We only had so much time that we could devote, and we… We're constantly, seemingly, operating from

153
00:17:19.790 --> 00:17:27.660
Dwight: old information. It was hard to keep up. But there came a point where we could just appreciate the larger truths.

154
00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:35.250
Dwight: And in some cases, we had to have what I've heard lovingly called some care frontizations.

155
00:17:35.540 --> 00:17:37.310
Dwight: And that's simply because…

156
00:17:37.430 --> 00:17:44.020
Dwight: We had some… some people, maybe it was because they were just a little bit too enthusiastic.

157
00:17:44.130 --> 00:17:46.740
Dwight: Who showed up in a way that was…

158
00:17:46.890 --> 00:17:52.880
Dwight: Less than kind, a little… a little impolite, a little bit, sharp-elbowed.

159
00:17:53.250 --> 00:17:59.710
Dwight: And in some ways, that were… That just violated the…

160
00:18:00.080 --> 00:18:03.739
Dwight: Accepted rules of how it is that people should behave.

161
00:18:05.340 --> 00:18:10.980
Dwight: And in some ways, we… there were some people that were asked to

162
00:18:12.180 --> 00:18:16.889
Dwight: Change their behaviors, some very indirectly at first.

163
00:18:17.280 --> 00:18:23.620
Dwight: And in other ways, the way that we navigated the tension was that…

164
00:18:23.990 --> 00:18:28.179
Dwight: We would not give oxygen to…

165
00:18:28.500 --> 00:18:37.389
Dwight: those bad actors in, whenever they would… would flare up. We… Thankfully, we were dealing with

166
00:18:37.990 --> 00:18:46.759
Dwight: Adults who had… had their… their own sets of issues. Some of… some of them were…

167
00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:49.989
Dwight: Blessed with the wisdom of being parents.

168
00:18:50.130 --> 00:18:53.620
Dwight: And so they could recognize some of the…

169
00:18:54.180 --> 00:19:03.360
Dwight: Some of the patterns that come from bullying, or from people that are maybe not used to playing in the same sandbox.

170
00:19:04.630 --> 00:19:07.470
Dwight: But we were able to…

171
00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:16.030
Dwight: To navigate everything, complete the tasks of what this group was asked to do, why we were assembled.

172
00:19:16.400 --> 00:19:22.380
Dwight: We did it successfully, and… We did it in such a way that everyone had a voice.

173
00:19:23.920 --> 00:19:28.270
Dwight: And in the end, we were all proud of the outcome.

174
00:19:28.800 --> 00:19:31.789
Dwight: We all grew from the experience, because

175
00:19:32.320 --> 00:19:38.710
Dwight: I'm a believer that there's something to be learned from navigating that personal tension.

176
00:19:39.010 --> 00:19:42.899
Dwight: We all grew from it, and I think that we're better for it.

177
00:19:44.630 --> 00:19:48.499
Dwight: And what I learned from this experience was…

178
00:19:49.050 --> 00:19:53.590
Dwight: That there are sometimes hard lessons that come

179
00:19:53.720 --> 00:19:57.190
Dwight: From having to engage with things that are difficult.

180
00:19:58.880 --> 00:20:03.790
Dwight: And sometimes it can be uncomfortable to navigate those things while you're going through them.

181
00:20:04.330 --> 00:20:08.879
Dwight: But it is… So worth it to get to the other side of them.

182
00:20:10.310 --> 00:20:13.459
Dwight: Alright, so that's enough story time for now.

183
00:20:13.610 --> 00:20:19.120
Dwight: And if you're listening and wondering if I may be talking about you directly.

184
00:20:19.330 --> 00:20:24.659
Dwight: Well, let's just say if you know me, there, there's a chance.

185
00:20:24.880 --> 00:20:26.349
Dwight: Reach out, we'll talk.

186
00:20:29.330 --> 00:20:37.090
Dwight: So, let's… let's get back to our framework here. So, what I want you to walk away with is the whole thing with

187
00:20:37.200 --> 00:20:42.190
Dwight: The framework. The three N's, notice, Name, and navigate.

188
00:20:42.670 --> 00:20:44.170
Dwight: Notice the signal.

189
00:20:44.790 --> 00:20:49.180
Dwight: Name the real question, And navigate with care.

190
00:20:52.120 --> 00:20:54.649
Dwight: Just because you avoid a conversation.

191
00:20:55.300 --> 00:20:56.830
Dwight: It doesn't disappear.

192
00:20:57.670 --> 00:20:59.509
Dwight: It shows up somewhere else.

193
00:21:00.010 --> 00:21:02.960
Dwight: It'll show up in missed deadlines.

194
00:21:03.170 --> 00:21:10.009
Dwight: It'll show up in resentment, in burnout, in turnover, in shallow collaboration.

195
00:21:10.560 --> 00:21:15.030
Dwight: Or a culture where people will stop bringing their best ideas.

196
00:21:15.440 --> 00:21:17.980
Dwight: Where people just phone it in.

197
00:21:18.550 --> 00:21:27.469
Dwight: Where there's just… A polite veneer over people doing as little as possible.

198
00:21:28.550 --> 00:21:31.680
Dwight: When people can be honest and still belong.

199
00:21:32.070 --> 00:21:36.700
Dwight: They can create. They can decide and lead differently.

200
00:21:38.780 --> 00:21:47.950
Dwight: For the love of creatives exists to help heart-centered creatives move from surviving in isolation To thriving in community.

201
00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:56.070
Dwight: Sometimes that means… Whenever you have multiple creative people together.

202
00:21:56.700 --> 00:21:59.149
Dwight: We may have to navigate tension.

203
00:21:59.410 --> 00:22:08.850
Dwight: But it's through employing our curiosity that we can go from a place of reactivity.

204
00:22:09.630 --> 00:22:20.500
Dwight: To making it to where We build on wonder. We ask what if. We aspire to do something greater.

205
00:22:21.500 --> 00:22:22.840
Dwight: It's a choice.

206
00:22:23.540 --> 00:22:27.060
Dwight: Now, granted, when we have multiple people together.

207
00:22:28.050 --> 00:22:31.769
Dwight: We need to find a way to bring everyone along to make that choice.

208
00:22:35.360 --> 00:22:38.230
Dwight: So, before we… we actually close out.

209
00:22:39.350 --> 00:22:44.649
Dwight: I want to ask you to walk away with one thing that you're going to do.

210
00:22:46.730 --> 00:22:52.420
Dwight: Before your next meeting, before your next gathering, Where you have…

211
00:22:52.800 --> 00:22:56.409
Dwight: The possibility of facing some of this creative tension.

212
00:22:58.010 --> 00:22:59.949
Dwight: I want you to keep this question in mind.

213
00:23:01.980 --> 00:23:05.959
Dwight: What's the conversation that we keep having around the edges?

214
00:23:06.890 --> 00:23:08.499
Dwight: But haven't truly named.

215
00:23:10.760 --> 00:23:12.459
Dwight: Alright? Just hold on to that.

216
00:23:14.630 --> 00:23:20.280
Dwight: And if there's a question that your team, organization, your creative community is avoiding.

217
00:23:20.750 --> 00:23:26.030
Dwight: Leave it in the comments, or you can use it on our SpeakPipe site.

218
00:23:26.300 --> 00:23:30.020
Dwight: Where you can just… go and…

219
00:23:30.470 --> 00:23:38.609
Dwight: talk and just let us know what's happening. I… I listen and read Everything that comes in.

220
00:23:40.220 --> 00:23:45.999
Dwight: I'll gather whatever themes there are and maybe bring them to a future conversation on this show.

221
00:23:46.110 --> 00:23:48.640
Dwight: And I promise to keep everything anonymous.

222
00:23:48.840 --> 00:23:52.950
Dwight: No names, no calling anyone out, no making it weird.

223
00:23:53.280 --> 00:23:56.969
Dwight: Just an honest look at the questions that deserve room.

224
00:23:58.580 --> 00:24:02.139
Dwight: Sometimes the first act of leadership isn't having the answer.

225
00:24:03.090 --> 00:24:08.359
Dwight: It's having the courage to create a room where the real question can be heard.

226
00:24:11.190 --> 00:24:19.139
Dwight: That's all for now, and I'll catch you on the next edition of Community and Becoming, For the Love of Creatives.
